New Phishing Attack

October 24, 2007

Recently there have been reports of a Phishing attack that appears to come from a person of influence within Merrill Lynch. This is a particularly insidious attack as it can exploit the victim in multiple ways. By simply clicking on the link indicated, this attack is capable of downloading malicious software to an unprotected personal computer. It will also request additional information in the form of common 'secret answer questions' that the perpetrators could use to reset your password at other financial sites. For example, they'll be asking for mother's maiden name, the name of your first elementary school, your paternal grandfathers name, etc.

Please remember: Neither First Republic Bank nor Merrill Lynch will ever ask our customers to supply authentication information, nor supply electronic acceptance of legal agreements, via an unsolicited email.

Please report any/all such suspicious emails to your local banking representative.
